The wife of the Minister of the Federal Capital territory, Hajiya Zainab Adamu Aliero has advocated the need to empower women because of the crucial role they play as the bedrock of the family. Hajiya Zainab stated this at Kuje Area Council in continuation of her visit to the 6 Area Councils of the FCT to flag off the skills acquisition training programme for the less privileged.

According to Hajiya Zainab, the idea behind the programme is to provide a platform that will help address the thorny issue of poverty especially at the grass root level. She emphasized the need to help the rural dwellers develop skills that will help them become self employed.
The programme she stated has been carefully planned in a way that the over 300 participants who will benefit from the scheme will be empowered with skills required to enable them become self reliant and productive citizens. She expressed the hope that beneficiaries will at the end of the day be able to transfer their skills to other people which will translate to general improvement of living standards.
 She added that the workshop will be in three stages. First is acquiring the skills, second is empowerment through the provision of basic equipment and finally is monitoring to ensure that beneficiaries succeed in their chosen fields.
In his address at the occasion, the Secretary for Social Development in the FCT, Senator Abdullahi Bala Adamu called on the participants to take advantage of the unique opportunity to learn a skill that will help pull them out of the poverty circle.
He said the Social Development Secretariat which has the mandate of initiating and implementing programmes aimed at uplifting the living conditions of the less privilege in the FCT will leave no stone unturned in its bid to help turn around their fortunes for the better.
He commended the wife of the president Hajiya Turai yar’adua whom he noted is at the vanguard of driving the important issue of wealth creation which is an important element of the 7- point agenda of the present administration. He further re-affirmed the commitment of the FCT minister Senator Muhammad Adamu Aliero for the unwavering support he gave the programme.
The skills acquisition programme which is to be launched in all the 6 Area Councils of the FCT by the wife of the FCT Minister is organized by the social development Secretariat in collaboration with an NGO, The Voice of the Less Privilege organization (VOLPO). The training will be offered in skills such as Soap making, bead making, Tying of head gear, toilet bar soap making, odor control, disinfectant production, liquid soap, tie and dye, cake baking  as well as hair plaiting.
