The Department of Engineering Services is one of the technical departments charged with the responsibility of providing Engineering Infrastructure and services in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The mission statement of the Department therefore is to provide functional, efficient and cost effective Engineering Infrastructure Services in the Federal Capital City (FCC).
The Department has the statutory responsibility for the conception, planning, design, procurement and development of Engineering Infrastructure and services in the Federal Capital City according to the Abuja Master Plan as shown in the drawing below and regional roads within the Federal Capital City (FCT). Activities of the Department also include geological investigation and Engineering studies, Engineering designs, construction and supervision of infrastructural facilities. These facilities include Roadworks, Water supply, Storm and Foul Sewage, Electricity and Telecommunications system. FCC DIVISIONS In order to effectively perform its functions, the department of Engineering Services is structured into six (6) divisions and two (2) specialized units. The divisions are as follows: 1. City Infrastructure (North) 2. City Infrastructure (South) 3. City Infrastructure (Central & Regional) 4. Water and Sewage 5. Logistics and Design 6. Electrical SPECIALIZED UNITS: 1. Geology 2. Administration. ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE DEPARTMENT District Development: The Abuja master plan provides for the division of the Federal Capital City (FCC) into four phases namely phases I, II, III & IV. Each phase is further sub-divided into districts. Sequel to the adoption of the city master plan, detailed engineering studies on the provisions of the master plan were carried out and various preliminary and final engineering designs for the infrastructural facilities for districts in phase 1 and some other districts in other phases of the city were made. Physical construction of the city started sometime in 1979. To date, about 90% of phase I comprising of 5 districts namely: Garki, Wuse, Maitama, Asokoro and Central Area Business district have been achieved. These districts have been serviced with Roads, Water, Electricity, Sewer Lines and Telecommunication Ducts. In phase II of the city, provision of Infrastructural facilities in the Utako district have been completed while works are at various stages of completion in Jabi and Gudu Districts. Also works are at various stages of implementation in Karmo and Idu districts in phase III of the City. In addition to the initial districts specified in the Abuja Master Plan, Asokoro Extension, Katampe Extension and Guzape Districts were later created. Works have been completed in Asokoro Extension while works are at various stages of completion in Katampe extension and Guzape districts. Layouts of Districts in Phases I, II, III and IV showing the developed and the outstanding districts to be provided with infrastructure is shown below while table 1 shows the stages of completion of Infrastructure in the districts apart from phase I. | S/No | Districts | % Completion of Infrastructure in the District | | 1 | Utako | 100 | | 2 | Jabi | 98.8 | | 3 | Gudu I | 100 | | 4 | Gudu II | 93 | | 5 | Guzape I | 51 | | 6 | Guzape II | 49 | | 7 | Katampe Extension | 92 | | 8 | Idu Industrial Area | 38 | | 9 | Karmo Residential Area | 49 |
